In 1976, the Florida legislature required the Commissioner of Education to “develop and submit to the Legislature the conceptual design, the specifications, a costed implementation plan and a phased schedule for development, installation, testing, and validation of a management information system for public school educational management.”

The Commissioner of Education formed the School District Council of Comprehensive Management Information Systems (SDCCMIS) which included one member from each school district. In 1981, the Florida Legislature asked SDCCMIS to assist in the above legislative effort by developing “a plan for information gathering and reporting. With the ambitious goal of having an interactive terminal in every Florida school” (This was later to be known as FIRN).

Between 1991 and 2004, yearly conferences were held at various locations in Florida. Some were in conjunction with FAEDS (Florida Association of Educational Data Systems).

In 2004, the legislation that led to the formation of SDCCMIS ended due to sunsetting and the former directors of SDCCMIS formed FAMIS. Conferences were held in Ocala, Fl between 2004 and 2008. The 2009 in-person conference was canceled and was replaced with a virtual conference. Beginning in 2010, FAMIS conferences began hosting both DOE and district sessions.
